A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck beneath the Tonga islands on Tuesday. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it did not expect a tsunami because the quake occurred at great depth below the seafloor. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at about 238 kilometers (148 miles) deep, with the epicenter located more than 150 kilometers from the town of Neiafu in Tonga.
