Rhode Island, December 14 — Multiple shootings were reported at Brown University on Saturday, and law enforcement is actively searching for the suspect, officials said. The university and local agencies urged students, staff and the public to avoid the area and follow safety instructions.
Brown University’s emergency alert system, BrownUAlert, warned of an active shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering building, which houses the undergraduate engineering computer lab, and instructed people to lock doors, silence phones and remain hidden. The alert reiterated guidance to evacuate if it is safe to do so, hide if evacuation is not possible, and fight only as a last resort.
University officials later reported further gunfire near Governor Street and continued to advise the community to shelter in place while police and federal agents coordinated their response. The ATF confirmed its Boston field office had agents responding and asked the public to stay clear and follow directions from local and state authorities. Providence Police said multiple shots were reported in the area and urged people to shelter in place or avoid the vicinity.
Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the FBI was on the scene and added, ‘God bless the victims and the families of the victims.’ FBI Boston said it was assisting Rhode Island law enforcement with evidence response, investigative and tactical support, and victim assistance.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee asked residents to monitor official channels and keep clear of the area, saying state police and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency were working closely with local law enforcement. State Attorney General Keith Hoffmann described the reports as ‘sickening’ and expressed sympathy for victims, the Brown community and first responders.
Brown University is a private Ivy League research institution and one of the oldest centers of higher education in the United States. According to a CNN analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 70 school shootings have occurred in the U.S. this year.
