New Delhi, December 5 (ANI): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his sustained attention to the Ukraine conflict, saying Moscow is working with the United States to explore avenues for a possible peaceful settlement as talks continue.
Washington is currently acting as a mediator to broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv in the four-year war. Speaking during his bilateral meeting with PM Modi on the first day of his two-day state visit, Putin highlighted the long-standing and substantive nature of India-Russia relations.
“I could share a great deal of details of events that are taking place in Ukraine, and the actions we are taking are in partnership with the US on a possible peaceful settlement. Thank you for your attention and action in finding a solution for the situation,” Putin said.
He underlined that the partnership is rooted in history and substance rather than rhetoric and expressed appreciation for PM Modi’s personal involvement in advancing bilateral cooperation. “I really appreciate that, and the fact that you, Prime Minister, are personally paying special attention to that,” he added, noting plans to move forward across several areas that reflect strong mutual trust.
Putin identified key sectors where India and Russia will deepen cooperation, including artificial intelligence, aircraft development, high technology, military-technical collaboration, and space exploration.
The remarks came as the two leaders took part in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, aimed at reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral ties and charting a roadmap forward. This is Putin’s first visit to India in four years.
Earlier, Putin paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat after his ceremonial welcome and a tri-services guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He laid a wreath, signed the visitors’ book at Rajghat, and was accompanied to the memorial by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Prior to visiting Rajghat, Putin was received at Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi, with the forecourt resounding to the Indian and Russian national anthems. Since their last meeting in December 2021, Putin arrived on Thursday; PM Modi broke with protocol to greet him on the tarmac and embraced him. The two leaders also shared a car ride to the PM’s Lok Kalyan Marg residence, where Putin was presented with a copy of the Bhagavad Gita.
According to TASS, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said the one-on-one meeting between Putin and PM Modi on Thursday lasted more than two and a half hours. (ANI)
