The White House has hailed the newly announced India–US trade agreement as a landmark achievement, framing it as a win for American workers, farmers and industry. On X, Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai described the deal as “historic” and celebrated the administration’s success in securing terms with a rapidly growing, top-five global economy that is home to more than one billion people.
India’s ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, also welcomed the agreement, calling it “A big WIN for a consequential partnership under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump.” He said the announcement opens up significant opportunities for both countries and marks an exciting new chapter in bilateral relations.
One notable detail in the announcement is that India will receive lower tariff rates than Pakistan. An Executive Order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump on July 31, 2025, set reciprocal tariff rates for Pakistan at 19%, while the new agreement grants more favorable terms to India.
The trade announcement comes as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is visiting Washington for a series of engagements. He is scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department on Tuesday at 3:30 pm local time. Jaishankar’s three-day visit also includes participation in the inaugural Critical Minerals Ministerial on February 4, where Secretary Rubio will convene global partners to strengthen cooperation on critical mineral supply chains.
