The United States on Friday urged negotiations for a broader arms control agreement after the New START treaty, which capped strategic nuclear deployments by the U.S. and Russia for more than two decades, expired on Thursday.
Thomas DiNanno, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, told delegates at the Disarmament Conference in Geneva that simply extending New START would not benefit the United States or the world because the treaty was flawed and excluded China. He said, “Today, the United States faces threats from multiple nuclear powers. In short, a bilateral treaty with only one nuclear power is simply inappropriate in 2026 and going forward.”
DiNanno told reporters earlier that President Donald Trump has been clear that he wants a new treaty on nuclear arms control.
