Washington DC [US], February 7 (ANI) — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order eliminating the extra 25% tariff that had been applied to all imports from India because of New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, the White House announced.
The tariff, originally imposed in August 2025 amid concerns about Russia’s actions in Ukraine and India’s purchases of Russian crude, will be ended following a review of new information and recommendations from senior US officials. Those officials assessed steps India has taken to address the national emergency declared under Executive Order 14066.
According to the order, India has committed to halt direct and indirect imports of Russian oil, pledged to purchase US energy products, and reached an agreement with Washington on a framework to deepen defence cooperation over the coming decade. Citing these developments, the president determined that India has taken “significant steps” to address the national emergency and to align sufficiently with the United States on national security, foreign policy and economic matters.
As a result, the additional 25% duty imposed under the prior executive order will be rescinded and related entries in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States will be terminated. Where applicable, refunds for duties already collected will be handled in accordance with US law and US Customs and Border Protection procedures.
The executive order authorizes the Secretary of State, working with other senior officials and departments, to implement the decision, including issuing necessary rules and regulations. The Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the US International Trade Commission, may make technical amendments to the tariff schedule by notice in the Federal Register.
The White House said it will continue to monitor India’s compliance, particularly with respect to Russian oil imports, and warned that the additional tariff could be reinstated if India resumes direct or indirect purchases from the Russian Federation. The tariff had been imposed earlier on the basis that India was importing Russian oil directly or indirectly. (ANI)
