Two Punjabi-origin men living in Canada have been arrested and charged after police say shots were fired at a Surrey home tied to alleged extortion threats.
Surrey Police Service reports the shooting occurred on April 22 at about 12:40 a.m. Officers responding to calls of gunfire attended a residence in the 13400 block of 87A Avenue. Police say the house and a vehicle were damaged; no one was injured.
The investigation was taken over by Surrey’s Extortion Response Team, which identified a suspect vehicle. With support from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team, the Canada Border Services Agency and other SPS units, investigators executed a search warrant at a Surrey residence.
Police have charged 22-year-old Damanjeet Singh with discharging a firearm into a place while knowing or being reckless as to whether someone was present, and with possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm without a licence. Thirty-year-old Pardaman Singh faces the same charges.
Both men are in custody. Damanjeet Singh is scheduled to appear in court on May 19 and Pardaman Singh on June 1. Surrey Police confirmed both are foreign nationals and said the Canada Border Services Agency has been involved in the matter.
Photographs of the accused were released by police, who said disclosure was needed to assist ongoing investigations and urged witnesses, victims or associates to provide information that could help uncover criminal networks tied to violent extortion.
Separately, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) recently issued a special bulletin warning of a coordinated campaign targeting financially vulnerable young Indian nationals in Canada. FINTRAC says some students on study permits are being used as foot soldiers by gangs to carry out targeted violence against South Asian diaspora communities.
FINTRAC named the Bishnoi and rival Bambiha gangs as drivers of this violence, and noted the Government of Canada designated the Bishnoi gang as a listed terrorist entity on September 29, 2025. The agency also warned that copycat actors and smaller criminal groups are exploiting the notoriety of these gangs to increase extortion threats.
Surrey Police continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information related to the incident or to extortion-linked networks to contact them.
