The Treasury Department announced that President Donald Trump’s signature will soon appear on U.S. paper currency, a change it says would mark the first time a sitting president’s name has been printed on dollar bills since paper money was introduced in 1861.
The move coincides with celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach posted on X that President Trump’s signature, alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s, will be featured on U.S. currency, calling the decision a historic first that reflects the president’s leadership and lasting impact.
Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved the final design for a 24-karat gold commemorative coin bearing Mr. Trump’s image to mark the semiquincentennial. The approved design depicts Trump leaning on the Resolute Desk with clenched fists and would be only the second time a living president appears on a U.S. coin.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised what he described as unprecedented economic growth and a strengthened dollar under President Trump, saying there was no more fitting way to recognize the country’s achievements than by issuing currency that bears the president’s name during the 250th anniversary. Treasurer Beach added that printing Trump’s signature on American currency was an appropriate acknowledgment of the president’s role in an economic revival.
