A Jalandhar rooftop has become an unexpected local landmark after an international touch was added to a residential skyline.
Gurjeet Singh Matharu, an NRI who spent 26 years living in New York City, placed a replica of the Statue of Liberty on the fourth-floor rooftop of his home in the Kishanpura area. Matharu says the installation is a personal way to stay connected to a city that shaped much of his life.
The miniature statue has drawn residents from surrounding neighborhoods and visitors from farther away, many of whom describe the visit as a little bit of New York in Punjab. A PTI tweet shared a video showing the rooftop figure and Matharu speaking about why he put it there.
Responses online were mixed. Some users compared the effort to regional quirks, noting how people in Chandigarh and Mohali sometimes build water tanks in playful shapes such as tractors or spheres, and called this a similar local expression. Others praised the idea as creative, while some questioned its necessity.
What began as a personal memento has turned into a public curiosity, highlighting how individual ties to other places can manifest visibly in a community and spark conversation.
