London [UK], May 24 (ANI) — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday welcomed reported progress in US‑Iran negotiations and urged any deal to bring the fighting in the region to an end and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on X, Starmer said Britain supports diplomatic efforts to de‑escalate tensions and secure lasting stability in West Asia. He said the priority must be “an agreement that brings the conflict to an end and reopens the Strait of Hormuz with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation.”
Starmer also reiterated that Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and said his government would continue protecting British nationals affected by the regional tensions. He added that the UK would work with international partners to seize diplomatic momentum and pursue a durable political settlement.
The remarks follow a Truth Social post by former US President Donald Trump on Saturday saying a deal had been “largely negotiated” between Tehran and Washington. Trump also said the US was in talks with other leaders about Gulf stability and issues tied to the Strait of Hormuz.
Axios, citing a US official, reported that a memorandum outlining a 60‑day ceasefire between the US and Iran was in its final stages, with negotiators seeking to close outstanding gaps. The draft reportedly centers on a strict diplomatic framework described as “relief for performance.”
If implemented, the agreement would immediately reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, temporarily ease pressure on global energy markets, and create a 60‑day window to negotiate a fuller dismantling of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Sources close to negotiations and mediators suggested an announcement could come imminently.
