New Delhi, May 23, 2026 — US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced on X that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking for President Donald Trump, invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the near future.
Gor described Rubio’s meeting with PM Modi as productive. The two held wide-ranging discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation in defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties. Rubio also briefed the prime minister on the US perspective regarding developments in West Asia.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi reaffirmed India’s support for peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy and asked Secretary Rubio to convey his warm greetings to President Trump. In a post on X, Modi said New Delhi and Washington will continue to work closely for the global good.
Those present at the meeting included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, US Ambassador Sergio Gor, US Under Secretary for State Allison Hooker and US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel.
Rubio arrived in India on May 23 for a four-day visit (May 23–26). He began the trip in Kolkata, where he paid tribute to Mother Teresa at the Missionaries of Charity — the first visit by a top US diplomat to the eastern city in 14 years, the delegation noted. Rubio is scheduled to travel to Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi and will deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy Support Annex Building.
The visit comes amid growing strategic convergence between India and the United States and ahead of the QUAD foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26. US officials say the engagements will emphasize strengthening defence partnerships, advanced technologies, trade ties and cooperation under the QUAD framework.
