Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed Oslo on May 19 for Rome, concluding the Norway leg of his five-nation visit and moving to the final stop of the tour. His brief stay in Oslo included participation in the 3rd India‑Nordic Summit, where he met leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to deepen cooperation across a wide range of fields.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted on X that the visit advanced India’s engagement with the Nordic region and described the outcomes as opening a new chapter in India‑Nordic and India‑Norway relations. Key areas of discussion at the summit included green technology, climate action, trade, innovation, artificial intelligence, Arctic research and defence collaboration.
As a tangible result of the talks, India and the Nordic countries elevated their relationship to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership, underlining shared democratic values and common goals for sustainable development.
The Rome visit, at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, runs from May 19–20 and is the final leg of Modi’s tour, which took place from May 15–20. During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Meloni aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties.
India and Italy have been building momentum in recent months, advancing a Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025–2029 that spans trade, investment, defence and security, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and people‑to‑people links. Bilateral trade reached about USD 16.77 billion in 2025, and cumulative Italian FDI into India stood near USD 3.66 billion from April 2000 through September 2025.
Modi last visited Italy in June 2024 for the G7 Summit. The Rome engagements are expected to open new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries. (Source: ANI)
