Oslo, May 19, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed Oslo on Tuesday for the final leg of his five-nation tour, travelling to Italy after completing a two-day visit to Norway that New Delhi described as “very fruitful.” The trip strengthened ties between India and the Nordic region and culminated in a new strategic partnership focused on green technology and innovation.
During his stay, Modi held bilateral talks with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and also met the prime ministers of Iceland, Finland and Denmark — Kristrun Frostadottir, Petteri Orpo and Mette Frederiksen, respectively. Discussions centered on deepening cooperation in clean energy, sustainability, trade, digitalisation and related areas.
Modi took part in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, where India and the Nordic countries agreed to elevate their relationship to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. The move is intended to accelerate collaboration on the clean and green transition, trade and investment, and the blue economy.
As part of the visit’s ceremonial highlights, Modi was awarded Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, in recognition of his role in advancing India–Norway relations. He also paid a courtesy call on King Harald V and highlighted the business opportunities emerging from India’s rapid transformation.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit produced important outcomes that open a new chapter in India–Nordic and India–Norway partnership, and thanked Norway for its warmth and hospitality.
Modi posted on X that he had concluded a “very fruitful visit,” noting productive talks with Prime Minister Store and positive decisions at the India–Nordic Summit.
The next stop is Rome, where Modi is travelling at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In Italy he is expected to meet President Sergio Mattarella and hold talks with PM Meloni. The visit comes against the backdrop of active implementation of the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, a roadmap covering cooperation across multiple sectors.
Bilateral trade between India and Italy reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025. The Indian government said the focus of Modi’s Italy visit will likely include investment, defence and security cooperation, clean energy, innovation, and science and technology.
The Norway leg of the tour reaffirmed New Delhi’s aim to expand partnerships with like-minded northern European partners on climate-friendly technologies, sustainable growth and mutually beneficial economic ties as Modi continues engagements across Europe.
