Kathmandu, March 4 (ANI) — Polling centres across Nepal have been prepared ahead of the general elections scheduled for March 5, election officials said, as the country heads to the polls following last year’s GenZ-led protests that toppled the previous government.
A polling site at Ratnrajya Madhyamik Vidyalay in Baneshwar, Kathmandu, is already set up for voting. Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said officials have completed arrangements at all locations.
EC Joint Secretary and spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai told ANI that election infrastructure and staff are in place nationwide. He said there are 23,112 voting centres and that election personnel, security teams and materials have been distributed to each station. Voting will run from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on March 5, Bhattarai added, and more than 3,000 candidates are contesting.
Election officer Sushil Acharya described the final preparations: teams have briefed local communities and candidates, security has been beefed up, and notices urging peace and banning alcohol were issued. At many polling sites officials have marked separate queues for male and female voters and established clear entrance and exit routes. After polls close at 5 PM, ballot boxes and other materials will be sealed and transported to election offices, Acharya said.
Security arrangements will include police inside polling booths and additional forces around the perimeter. “Inside the polling booth there will be Nepal Police and Election Police, while in the outer perimeter there will be the Armed Police Force and the Nepali Army,” Acharya said.
Election Officer Churaman Khadka confirmed the voting hours and readiness, noting that Kathmandu alone contains 10 constituencies and that 107 parties are participating in the nationwide contest. “All preparations for free and fair elections have been made,” he said.
The elections follow political upheaval last September, when GenZ demonstrations played a key role in bringing down the previous administration and reshaping the political landscape.
