Kathmandu, April 30 (ANI) — Nepal Airlines on Thursday apologised for wrongly displaying Indian territories on a network map shared on its social media, saying the map contained “cartographic inaccuracies” and did not reflect the official stance of Nepal or the airline.
The carrier said it removed the post and is conducting an internal review to ensure its materials meet accuracy standards. In a post on X, Nepal Airlines wrote: “We sincerely apologize for error in the network map recently shared on our social media channels. The map contained significant cartographic inaccuracies regarding international boundaries that do not reflect the official stance of Nepal or Nepal Airlines. We have immediately removed the post and are conducting an internal review to ensure our materials meet the highest standards of accuracy. We deeply value our strong relationships with our neighbours and friends in the region and regret any offense the post has caused.”
A similar controversy arose in May 2020 when then-President Bidhya Devi Bhandari announced a new official map that included territories claimed by Nepal — Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulekh — which are disputed with India. Last year, India published a revised map showing Kalapani within its borders, prompting protests from Kathmandu.
India and Nepal share an open border of about 1,800 km. Nepal cites the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli to assert that territories east of the Kali (Mahakali) river, including Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipulekh, belong to Nepal. The Lipulekh Pass claim rests on the Sugauli treaty; Kathmandu also claims Limpiyadhura and Kalapani, though Indian troops have been stationed in the area since India’s 1962 conflict with China.
Tensions rose after India inaugurated a road on May 8, 2020 connecting the Lipulekh pass in Uttarakhand with the Kailash Mansarovar route in China. Nepal protested the road and has considered establishing a security post in the area. India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded that the road through Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand “lies completely within the territory of India.” (ANI)
