Seattle, April 2 (ANI) — The Consulate General of India in Seattle marked a milestone after the Nebraska Legislature formally adopted a resolution recognizing the festival of Diwali. The legislative measure, SLR-424, was introduced by State Senator John Fredrickson and signed on March 31.
The resolution acknowledges Diwali (Deepavali) as one of the largest and most widely observed festivals in Indian tradition, celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide. It notes the festival’s role in bringing communities together and recognizes the contributions of Nebraska’s Indian and Indian-American communities to the state’s cultural and social life.
According to the legislative text, Diwali is observed over five days, with the third day regarded as the most important. The resolution describes that day as a time of thanksgiving that marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year, fosters family togetherness, and symbolizes the victory of goodness, light, and knowledge over evil and darkness.
In a post on X, the Consulate General thanked Senator Fredrickson for sponsoring the resolution and expressed appreciation to members of the Indian-American community for their support in securing the recognition. The resolution formally states that the Nebraska Legislature recognizes the celebration of Diwali and its significance to Nebraskans who observe the holiday, a gesture noted as honoring the state’s cultural diversity and inclusivity.
