Rome, May 19, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday local time to conclude a five-nation diplomatic tour. He is scheduled to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella, hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and take part in other engagements before returning to India on Wednesday.
The visit comes amid growing momentum in India‑Italy relations. Both countries are advancing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, a broad cooperation framework covering trade, investment, defence and security, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and people‑to‑people ties. Bilateral trade reached USD 16.77 billion in 2025, and cumulative foreign direct investment from Italy into India stood at USD 3.66 billion for the period April 2000–September 2025.
Modi previously visited Italy for the G7 summit in June 2024. This trip is the final leg of a tour that included the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.
Earlier Tuesday, the Prime Minister took part in the 3rd India‑Nordic Summit in Oslo, meeting leaders from Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. The summit focused on cooperation in green technology, climate action, trade, innovation, artificial intelligence, Arctic research and defence collaboration. India and the Nordic countries elevated their relationship to a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership to deepen collaboration on sustainable development and shared democratic values.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted that Modi departed Oslo after a successful visit that advanced India‑Nordic and India‑Norway partnerships and that he subsequently proceeded to Rome for the final stop of the five‑country tour.
