New Delhi, March 6 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said at the Raisina Dialogue 2026 that the era of big deals between dominant powers is over and that global multipolarity is now an irreversible reality grounded in shared historical experiences of the Global South.
He pointed to India’s vaccine diplomacy during the Covid pandemic as a concrete example of that solidarity. Jaishankar noted that India sent vaccines to other Global South countries even while it was still rolling out its own vaccination program, underscoring a real emotional and cultural connection among those countries and a distinction in outlook compared with the global West.
Jaishankar also observed a changing dynamic within Western alliances, saying the once cohesive identity of the Global West is fragmenting. He argued that structural change in international relations means larger countries will increasingly form temporary, limited compacts on specific issues rather than negotiate a single dominant deal that shapes global affairs.
On the relationship between multipolarity and multilateralism, he said the two are not mutually exclusive. Multipolarity can exist with multilateralism or without it, and the success of multilateral institutions should not be predicated on weakening multipolarity, because that weakening is unlikely to occur.
The minister’s remarks highlighted a shift toward more fluid, issue-based alignments among major powers and reiterated the importance of the Global South as a cohesive force born of common historical experiences.
