Tehran, March 4 (ANI) — Iran’s Leadership Council told state media on Wednesday that a successor to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be appointed at the earliest opportunity.
In a video posted by Tasnim, a council official said the country’s leadership remains stable and that the council is running state affairs while preparations continue to name a new leader as soon as conditions allow. The official noted the nation is in a wartime situation, contrasting it with the post-revolution period after Ayatollah Khomeini, and said the Assembly of Experts is working actively on the matter.
Separately, Iran’s Consulate General in Mumbai denied reports from Israeli outlets that Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, had been chosen as successor. In a post on X, the consulate said media speculation about candidates selected by the Assembly of Experts “have no official source and are officially denied.” Israeli media had reported Mojtaba Khamenei’s selection, but there has been no independent confirmation from Iranian state broadcasters.
Iranian state media said Iranians will hold farewell ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini prayer ground beginning tonight. The ceremonies are expected to last three days, and details of the funeral procession will be announced once finalized.
The conflict in the Middle East has entered its fifth day after US and Israeli strikes that reportedly killed Ayatollah Khamenei and other senior figures. Tehran has carried out counter-strikes targeting American military bases and Israeli assets in the region in response.
