IndiGo has launched nonstop services between Chennai and Réunion, becoming the only Indian carrier to operate direct flights to the French overseas territory. Services began on April 29 and are intended to boost tourism, trade and travel for the large diaspora across the western Indian Ocean.
The route runs three times weekly using Airbus A320 aircraft. Flight 6E 1871 departs Chennai at 12:20 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and arrives in Réunion at 5:10 pm local time. The return service, 6E 1872, leaves Réunion at 6:10 pm and arrives in Chennai at 2:10 am the following day.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, pointed to Réunion’s natural attractions—volcanic peaks, rainforests, waterfalls and beaches—and the wide range of activities on offer, from hiking in UNESCO-listed sites to canyoning, paragliding, whale watching and snorkeling. The airline said the new link will make travel easier for leisure and business passengers as well as the island’s sizable Indian-origin community, estimated at around 300,000 people, supporting steady demand for visits to friends and relatives (VFR) alongside business, medical, wellness and religious travel.
Réunion is promoting itself as a high-value destination for luxury, adventure and sustainable tourism, featuring UNESCO-recognized pitons, cirques and ramparts and a multicultural heritage with African, European, Indian and Asian influences. Expanding MICE infrastructure is also attracting corporate events and business visitors.
The Chennai–Réunion connection fits India’s broader aviation approach of developing metros like Chennai as global gateways under a hub-and-spoke model to strengthen international connectivity and inbound tourism. Passengers can book tickets via IndiGo’s website, mobile app or authorized agents. The airline also offers add-ons such as pre-booked meals, seat selection, Flexi fares and UpFront options. Travelers should check visa requirements and current travel guidelines before booking.
