Colombo, Feb 5 (ANI): Indian Naval Ship Gharial arrived in Colombo carrying 10 modular Bailey bridges to support Sri Lanka’s reconstruction after Cyclone Ditwah. The delivery follows the inauguration of a Bailey bridge by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in December 2025.
The prefabricated bridges will enable rapid restoration of damaged road links, facilitating civilian movement and allowing relief and rehabilitation teams to reach affected communities more quickly. This humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) effort is part of India’s USD 450 million Special Economic Package announced by EAM Jaishankar and builds on regional cooperation under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
The deployment underscores the Indian Navy’s role as a first responder and a trusted partner in the Indian Ocean Region, reaffirming India’s support to its maritime neighbours in times of crisis. The bridges are expected to accelerate access for emergency services and the distribution of aid to the areas most severely impacted by the cyclone.
