India says it is sourcing crude oil and LPG from a range of countries, including Russia, while intensifying efforts to protect domestic supplies amid disruptions to shipping lanes and concerns over LPG availability. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi is focused on energy security through diversified sourcing even as tensions in West Asia and related logistical challenges affect supply chains.
Jaiswal noted that energy shipping routes have been impacted and that the government is closely monitoring the situation through regular inter-ministerial coordination, including daily briefings led by the Petroleum Ministry. He emphasized that, given current supply constraints, domestic LPG consumption is being prioritised: household needs will be addressed before those of commercial establishments.
Recent arrivals of LPG tankers have eased some pressure, Jaiswal said, and authorities are seeking additional supplies from other global sources to bolster inventories. On questions about particular shipments, he described India’s procurement approach as broad-based, saying it is normal for tankers to arrive from different regions and that the country will continue to maintain diversified options. “We are buying from various sources, including Russia,” he said, adding that oil imports and tanker movements are an ongoing process.
As one of the world’s largest importers of crude and LPG, India has been recalibrating its sourcing strategy to reduce risks from volatile markets and maritime disruptions, with supplier diversification and domestic demand prioritisation central to ensuring uninterrupted availability.
