Tokyo, April 24, 2026 — India and Japan held the 8th Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Tokyo from April 22–24, 2026, focusing on deepening defence cooperation and improving interoperability between the two armies.
Representatives of the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) discussed measures to enhance interoperability through expanded bilateral exercises and increased exchanges of subject-matter experts (SMEs). The Indian Embassy in Japan said on X that the delegations reviewed existing cooperation and outlined future engagements across a range of domains.
The visiting Indian delegation paid calls on India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagma M. Mallick, and on General ARAI Masayoshi, Chief of Staff of the JGSDF. An Indian Army statement described the talks as productive, noting both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific while reviewing ongoing defence cooperation and planning future activities.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed Japan’s decision to review its long-standing framework governing the transfer of defence equipment and technology, calling it a positive step that could strengthen bilateral security cooperation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India welcomes Japan’s review of the three principles on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. Defence and security cooperation form an important pillar of the India-Japan special strategic and global partnership.” He added that both countries have continually worked to deepen collaboration under their shared strategic vision and pointed to commitments in the Joint Declaration on security cooperation to increase practical cooperation in support of national security and economic dynamism.
