Former Supreme Court justice of Nepal Hargovind Singh Pradhan died in Dharamsala on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 96.
Born in 1930, Pradhan completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Dallas, Texas, before returning to build a distinguished legal career. He served on Nepal’s Supreme Court, earning respect in both Nepal and India for his scholarship, integrity and contributions to jurisprudence and the Indo-Nepal legal community.
After retiring from the bench, Pradhan made Dharamsala his permanent home and stayed engaged in academic, social and public service activities. Colleagues and acquaintances remembered him as a gentle, thoughtful and erudite figure who embodied the highest traditions of the legal profession.
He is survived by his wife, Kamala Pradhan, three sons and a daughter. His last rites were held in Dharamsala on Thursday, attended by family, friends, members of the Bar and other prominent citizens. Himachal Pradesh MLA Sudhir Sharma also attended to pay respects and offered condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the people of Dharamsala.
