Challenges Ahead for India-US Relations Despite Recent Visits

Uncertain Foundations

The relationship between the United States and India has been facing some challenges, particularly under the Trump administration. The focus has often been on immediate interests rather than long-term strategies, impacting the two nations' rapport.

Shifting Priorities

One of the core issues with the current approach is its prioritization of short-term goals, especially related to managing inflation in the lead-up to US midterm elections. This method contrasts sharply with previous administrations, which aimed to cultivate a balanced and strategic alliance over time.

Two significant pillars that have traditionally supported the India-US relationship appear to be weakening. The shared democratic ideals that once united the nations have become less emphasized, especially in light of the current geopolitical climate. Furthermore, India's role as a counterbalance to China has diminished in importance, as both countries are now seeking to stabilize their own relations with Beijing independently.

Changing Perspectives

This shift in priorities was echoed earlier this year by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who remarked that the US would avoid past errors, particularly in allowing India to grow as an economic competitor. This marks a stark departure from the support offered by earlier US administrations, which played a vital role in facilitating India’s rise on the global stage.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, there are critical developments that may signal a shift in the India-US partnership. Bilateral trade agreements and the upcoming Quad leaders’ summit are significant indicators to watch. However, these efforts come with their own set of challenges. For instance, India's finance minister has indicated that trade discussions have stalled, and it has been over two years since the last Quad leaders’ summit took place. Nonetheless, optimistic reports suggest that progress may be closer than anticipated, especially with a Quad summit planned to occur in Manila this November.

The Role of Engagements

Senator Marco Rubio’s recent visits to key Indian cities focused on finance and energy play a critical role in affirming India's strategic value to the US. However, merely making sporadic visits or launching individual projects will not suffice for a substantive reset of relations.

In order to foster a more enduring partnership, there needs to be a revival of the strategic rationale that originally brought the US and India together. This involves moving beyond temporary gestures and working towards a unified vision for the future.

As the international landscape continues to evolve, strengthening these international ties will require a commitment from both sides to engage in ongoing dialogue and cooperation.

Dr. Chietigj Bajpaee, a senior research fellow for South Asia in the Asia-Pacific Programme at Chatham House, emphasizes the need for a renewed strategic focus in the India-US relationship.
