Sao Paulo, December 3 (ANI) — Petrobras President Magda Chambriard announced that Brazil aims to raise national oil-refining capacity to about 400,000 barrels per day by 2030. The statement was made at the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest) in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, during a presentation of new investment plans, according to Brasil 247.
Chambriard described Rnest as the most technologically advanced refinery in Petrobras’ network and said the planned expansion will depend on complementary port and rail investments to support operations. With those upgrades, Rnest is expected to exceed 200,000 barrels per day.
Brazil’s presidential office confirmed that Petrobras will allocate roughly R$12 billion to complete Train 2 at Abreu e Lima and carry out essential maintenance on Train 1. Those works are projected to add about 130,000 barrels per day, allowing Rnest to reach roughly 260,000 barrels per day by 2029.
The development plan includes sustainability measures, notably installing a photovoltaic power plant to reduce reliance on natural gas and lower the refinery’s carbon footprint.
Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira said the upgraded Abreu e Lima refinery will become Brazil’s second-most important facility after the Paulinia Refinery (Replan).
