Washington, DC — US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Washington considers trade with India a top priority and expects additional meetings between trade teams as both sides work to finalise an interim agreement.
Speaking to ANI, Pigott said a balanced trading relationship would strengthen ties between the two countries and allow them to “realise the full economic potential” of their partnership. He added that further discussions led by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) are anticipated in the near term.
Pigott also praised US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor for his outreach to Indian officials, saying Gor’s engagement reflects the priority Washington places on deepening the strategic partnership for mutual benefit.
India and the United States are reported to be nearing completion of a much-anticipated interim trade deal, with negotiators in a final stretch. At the US‑India TRUST Initiative event at IIT Delhi, Ambassador Gor said last week an Indian team travelled to Washington to resolve the final 1 percent of outstanding issues, and a US delegation is due to visit India next week to continue talks. Gor said he fully expects the agreement to be signed in the coming weeks or months.
India’s Commerce Ministry has confirmed a high-level US trade delegation will be in India June 1–4 to work through remaining clauses. Gor highlighted the rapid expansion of bilateral commerce, noting trade in goods and services rose from about USD 20 billion to more than USD 220 billion over the past two decades, and called India an increasingly important economic and strategic partner.
