India and Russia have taken steps to strengthen their military partnership during the 5th Sub Working Group (Land) meeting held under the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC). The Indian Army said in a post on X that the high-level talks focused on enhancing mutual learning, operational coordination and bilateral military capabilities, marking another milestone in Army-to-Army ties.
Delegations from both sides conducted productive deliberations aimed at boosting interoperability and sharing best practices. According to the Indian Army, the visiting team also inspected the Shatrujeet Brigade to explore additional areas for defence cooperation, a visit noted by ADGPI.
The talks come as broader India-Russia engagement deepens across defence manufacturing, space cooperation and fertiliser supply — areas Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said were subjects of “detailed discussions” during his May visit to India. Speaking after the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Lavrov said he held extended talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, building on agreements reached at last December’s India-Russia summit in New Delhi between President Vladimir Putin and PM Modi.
Lavrov said the bilateral roadmap includes joint weapons production, expanded collaboration in the space sector, and measures to stabilise fertiliser supplies. He also stressed work to strengthen cooperation mechanisms so economic ties can better withstand “negative, unfriendly pressure from third countries.” Energy security, Lavrov added, remains an important part of the agenda and Russia is responsive to India’s needs.
The Kremlin has confirmed that President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12–13 this year, a visit cited by the Russian Embassy in South Africa quoting Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov. This will be Putin’s second trip to India within a year; he previously visited for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December 2025. (ANI)
