New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 23 for wide-ranging talks aimed at deepening the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The leaders discussed cooperation across defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties.
Rubio briefed the prime minister on the US perspective regarding developments in West Asia. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent support for resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy and stressed continued engagement for regional and global peace and security. He asked Rubio to convey his warm greetings to President Trump and said he looked forward to continued exchanges.
In a post on X, Modi said New Delhi and Washington would continue to work closely for the global good. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the meeting as productive, noting discussions on ways to deepen cooperation in security, trade and critical technologies that strengthen both countries and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Those present at the meeting included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, US Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Under Secretary for State Allison Hooker. US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel and Rubio’s wife Jeanette were among the delegation members accompanying the secretary.
Rubio began the four-day visit with a stop in Kolkata, where he paid tribute to Mother Teresa at the Missionaries of Charity. His Kolkata visit marked the first by a senior US diplomat to the city in 14 years. Over the course of the trip, scheduled through May 26, Rubio is expected to travel to Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi and will deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy Support Annex Building.
Indian officials said the visit will further strengthen cooperation on key strategic priorities, and comes ahead of the QUAD foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26. Expected areas of focus during the engagements include defence partnerships, advanced technologies, trade ties, energy security and collaboration under the QUAD framework.
