New Delhi, May 22 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev on Friday to review the SCO’s initiatives, activities and key regional and global developments. Jaishankar posted about the meeting on X, saying he was pleased to meet Yermekbayev and that their discussion covered the organisation’s work as well as broader international and regional issues.
The meeting underscores continued Indian engagement with the SCO on topics such as regional connectivity, security cooperation and multilateral coordination. It follows India’s recent participation in SCO defence-level talks in Bishkek.
Last month, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting with his counterparts from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Belarus. In his talks with Kyrgyz Defence Minister Major General Mukambetov Ruslan Mustafaevich, Singh discussed ways to deepen bilateral defence ties. India also provided two indigenously developed Bhishm Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes to Kyrgyzstan for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and search-and-rescue operations.
Singh announced the completion of a project supplying 12 computer-system sets each to the IT centres at the Kyrgyz Military Institute in Bishkek and Military Unit 36806 in Osh, along with installation of wargaming software and on-the-job training for Kyrgyz armed forces personnel.
In discussions with Kazakhstan’s defence minister, Singh highlighted the breadth of defence cooperation as a key pillar of bilateral relations. With Belarusian Defence Minister Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin, he emphasized India’s priority on building a mutually beneficial partnership, identifying capacity building and training as major cooperation areas. The Defence Minister also held brief interactions with China’s Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun and Russia’s Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.
