Beijing, May 20 — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held extensive talks in Beijing during Putin’s two-day state visit, urging the protection of international fairness and opposing unilateral actions and “bullying practices” amid rising global uncertainty.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Xi warned the international situation remains “fluid and turbulent,” with unilateralism and hegemonism resurging even as peace, development and cooperation remain global aspirations.
Xi said that as permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia must cooperate to uphold the authority of the UN, defend international fairness and justice, and resist coercive unilateral acts. He also reiterated opposition to efforts that deny the outcomes of World War II or seek to revive fascism or militarism.
The leaders reviewed bilateral ties and agreed the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination has reached a new starting point for higher-quality development. Xi said the two sides had reached important consensus on deepening cooperation across political, economic, energy, scientific and people-to-people fields.
During the visit, Xi and Putin attended a photo exhibition titled “China-Russia Everlasting Friendship: A Model of Major-Country Relations” and opened the China-Russia Years of Education initiative, aimed at expanding educational cooperation and youth and academic exchanges.
On the Middle East, Xi urged an immediate halt to hostilities, calling for restraint and renewed negotiations to prevent further escalation and warning that continued conflict could disrupt global energy stability and supply chains.
The talks also marked the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership and the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation, milestones both sides said continue to guide their relationship.
Mao Ning described Putin’s visit as “fruitful.” After concluding engagements in Beijing, the Russian president departed for Moscow.
