A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China early Monday, killing two people and prompting the evacuation of more than 7,000 residents in the city of Liuzhou as rescue operations continued, state media reported.
Two fatalities have been confirmed and one person remains missing, while four others were taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to CCTV and the state news agency Xinhua. Thirteen buildings collapsed in the early hours, CCTV said.
Rescue teams were deployed to affected areas, including Taiyang village in Liuzhou, where workers were seen inspecting damaged structures. Railway authorities said they were checking rail lines for damage and warned of possible transport disruptions while inspections were carried out.
Despite the quake, state media reported that communication and power lines, as well as water and gas supplies and local traffic, were operating normally in the area. Local officials continued search-and-rescue efforts and assessments of building safety.
The report was filed by Reuters and updated from Beijing on May 18, 2026.
