Gothenburg, Sweden — An energetic, celebratory atmosphere greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as large numbers of Indian expatriates turned out to welcome him to Gothenburg, the third stop on his five-nation tour. Hundreds of people arrived hours early, transforming the arrival area into a colourful display of Indian culture and pride on Nordic soil.
Members of the diaspora described the day as historic and deeply personal. One attendee said the community had travelled from across Sweden and waited for hours just to catch a glimpse of the prime minister, adding that his work for India filled them with pride. Another visitor called the visit “a once-in-a-lifetime” moment and “a dream come true.”
Cultural performances and devotional tributes set a warm tone. Devashree sang the devotional song “Jyoti Kalash Chhalke,” while representatives from several socio-cultural organisations joined the reception. Kamala Priya, from ISKCON, offered a traditional Hare Krishna greeting as part of the welcome.
The public reception provided a lively backdrop to a high-profile, two-day state visit scheduled for May 17–18 at the personal invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. This marks Mr. Modi’s first visit to Sweden since 2018 and comes amid broader efforts to deepen ties between India and Europe.
Official talks are expected to cover a wide agenda: strengthening cooperation on the green transition, artificial intelligence, start-ups, resilient supply chains, space, and climate action. Economic diplomacy will play a prominent role, with the leaders meeting business and industry figures to boost bilateral trade and investment. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs highlighted opportunities to expand trade — which reached $7.75 billion in 2025 — and noted Swedish foreign direct investment into India at $2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025.
The visit also aims to build on innovation frameworks and institutional ties established after the 2018 India-Nordic Summit. With Sweden regarded as one of Europe’s most innovation-driven economies, discussions are expected to explore collaboration in defence manufacturing, emerging technologies and strengthened people-to-people links.
High-level delegations will assess progress under existing bilateral mechanisms and map new pathways for strategic partnership, reflecting New Delhi’s broader engagement with the European Union, including active dialogues on a possible free trade agreement.
The warm reception in Gothenburg highlighted the strong personal and cultural connections the Indian community maintains with their homeland, even as officials seek to translate that goodwill into deeper economic and technological cooperation between India and Sweden. (Source: ANI)
