New Delhi, May 15 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has congratulated Anita Orban on her appointment as Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. In a post on X, he welcomed her selection and said he looks forward to working together to deepen India–Hungary ties and to advance the India–EU strategic partnership.
Orban described the day as the start of a new chapter for Hungary. She noted that the inaugural session of the new Parliament saw representatives take their oaths and hear an address from President Tamás Sulyok. Parliament is set to elect a new Speaker, and Péter Magyar is widely expected to be chosen as Prime Minister by open vote. Orban also highlighted the significance of the timing — the events coinciding with Europe Day and large crowds gathering on Kossuth Square to follow proceedings.
India and Hungary maintain a long-standing, multifaceted relationship that has endured political and economic shifts over decades. Hungarians have historically expressed gratitude for India’s support during the 1956 uprising. The two countries have cooperated across areas such as culture, trade and technology.
Jaishankar previously visited Hungary from August 25–27, 2019, meeting then-Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. During that visit the ministers signed a Cultural Exchange Programme for 2019–22 and identified priority sectors for cooperation, including film production, digitalization, water management, solar energy and pharmaceuticals. Hungary has also announced its decision to join the International Solar Alliance.
