Beijing, May 14, 2026 (ANI) — US President Donald Trump said Thursday that China would like to see the Strait of Hormuz open. In an interview with Fox News, Trump quoted President Xi Jinping as offering to help mediate, saying, “If I can be of any help at all, I would like to be of help.” Trump added that any country buying large amounts of oil has a relationship with the region and suggested Xi would like to see the waterway accessible.
Trump also extended an invitation for President Xi and Madame Peng to visit the White House in September and referenced a proposed toast at the state banquet in Beijing, praising the long ties between the American and Chinese people. “To the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people. It’s a very special relationship,” he said, and he recalled wartime ties, noting that President Franklin Roosevelt’s praise for the Chinese people had received warm responses in the United States.
At the Beijing state banquet, Xi struck a conciliatory tone, saying China’s “great rejuvenation” and America’s “Make America Great Again” agenda could advance together as the two countries pursue a more stable bilateral relationship. In a high-profile toast, Xi described the relationship between the world’s two largest economies as the most important bilateral link of the modern era and warned that both sides “must make it work and never mess it up.” He emphasized that the peoples of China and the United States are “both great peoples,” and suggested their national ambitions can progress side by side, helping each other and promoting global well-being.
Throughout the evening Xi repeatedly urged cooperation and cautioned against confrontation, saying both nations would benefit from working together.
