Tehran, May 7 — Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, is reported to be likely to travel to India to take part in BRICS meetings in New Delhi, Iranian sources say.
India currently holds the BRICS presidency and will host the bloc’s Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14–15. Russia has confirmed that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend those sessions; the Russian Foreign Ministry says Lavrov will be in India on May 14–15.
TASS quoted Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying the meetings will offer a platform for substantive discussion of pressing international issues and ways to strengthen global governance, particularly for countries representing the global majority. Zakharova added that special emphasis will be placed on boosting strategic partnerships ahead of the 18th BRICS summit, also slated for New Delhi in September.
According to the Russian ministry, Lavrov’s visit will include a full bilateral programme, including talks with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar. Those talks are expected to address the full spectrum of Russia–India ties, upcoming contacts at various levels, and preparations for meetings of the intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation.
Earlier, BRICS deputy foreign ministers and special envoys for the Middle East and North Africa met in New Delhi on April 23–24 to share views on recent regional developments.
BRICS currently comprises eleven major emerging and developing economies: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping functions as a consultative platform for cooperation on issues of regional and global significance and on political and economic governance.
India, which holds the BRICS chairship for 2026, has framed its leadership around the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” a people-centered, humanity-first approach the Indian prime minister emphasized at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
