JFE Engineering, originally rooted in steelmaking and shipbuilding, has broadened its capabilities into energy, environmental technologies and social infrastructure. With global priorities shifting toward sustainability, the company has made the environment a central business focus and is increasingly applying its expertise beyond Japan to support a circular economy.
JFE has delivered several water-treatment projects across Asia, including facilities in the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia that clean wastewater and return purified water to rivers. Responding to rising demand for safe water, the firm is enhancing its purification technologies and plans to deploy similar systems in India. To support local operations, JFE established an Indian subsidiary in 2011 to provide engineering, facility supply and water-management services.
Waste-to-energy is another priority. Known in Japan as a reliable contractor, JFE is moving into India’s emerging waste-to-energy market with a full-service approach—design and construction, investment, operations and electricity management. While developing and operating a waste-to-energy plant in Vietnam, JFE trained about 200 employees from its Indian unit: those staff managed procurement of machinery and equipment according to project plans, gaining hands-on experience. Building on that training model, JFE is targeting projects in Andhra Pradesh next.
JFE’s strategy stresses not only “make in India” but also “educate and grow in India,” signaling a long-term commitment to transfer technology, build local capacity and help India reduce waste and improve water security. Success in India is expected to serve as a platform for wider global supply and operations.
