New Delhi, May 7 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday that it will release updates at an appropriate time about which leaders will attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in mid-May and about the proposed visit to India by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during a press briefing in New Delhi while responding to questions from the media. Asked how many countries had confirmed participation in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaiswal said India, as the current BRICS chair, will host several meetings, including the Foreign Ministers’ meeting, and that confirmations and dates will be shared when ready.
Jaiswal added that India has invited BRICS member countries, partner countries and other nations, and that the government will provide details on participation and attending leaders in due course.
Sources in Iran indicate that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi is likely to visit New Delhi to take part in BRICS-related engagements. India, which holds the BRICS presidency this year, is scheduled to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14 and 15.
Russia previously announced that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would visit India for the meeting. In a social media post on April 29, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov would be in India from May 14-15 to participate in BRICS engagements.
BRICS comprises 11 major emerging markets and developing countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping serves as a platform for consultation and cooperation on issues of global and regional significance as well as matters of political and economic governance.
India, which holds the 2026 BRICS chairship, is guided by the theme Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability, reflecting a people-centric, humanity-first approach articulated by the Prime Minister at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
When asked about the proposed visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and whether a Quad Foreign Ministers meeting would be held during that visit, Jaiswal said details would be provided in due course and that appropriate information will be shared at the right time.
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed enthusiasm about Rubio’s planned visit, saying Washington values its growing partnership with New Delhi and is committed to further strengthening bilateral ties.
