IndiGo has begun non-stop services between Chennai and Reunion Island, becoming the only Indian carrier to offer direct flights to the French overseas territory. Operations commenced on April 29 and are expected to bolster tourism, trade and diaspora travel across the western Indian Ocean region.
The route operates three times a week using Airbus A320 aircraft. Flight 6E 1871 departs Chennai at 12:20 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Reunion at 5:10 pm local time. The return service, 6E 1872, leaves Reunion at 6:10 pm and lands in Chennai at 2:10 am the next day.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, highlighted Reunion’s appeal—volcanic peaks, rainforests, waterfalls and beaches—and the variety of activities available, from hiking in UNESCO-listed parks to canyoning, paragliding, whale watching and snorkeling. The carrier said direct connectivity will improve convenience for leisure and business travelers as well as the large Indian-origin community on the island, estimated at around 300,000 people (over one-third of the island’s population), pointing to steady demand for VFR travel alongside business, medical, wellness and religious travel.
Reunion Island is positioning itself as a high-value destination for luxury, adventure and sustainable tourism, with UNESCO-recognized pitons, cirques and ramparts and a cultural mix reflecting African, European, Indian and Asian influences. Growing MICE infrastructure is also drawing corporate events and business visitors.
The Chennai–Reunion link aligns with India’s aviation strategy to develop metros like Chennai as global gateways under a hub-and-spoke model, enhancing international connectivity and inbound tourism. Passengers can book via IndiGo’s website, mobile app and authorized agents. The airline offers add-ons such as pre-booked meals, seat selection, Flexi fares and UpFront options. Travelers are advised to check visa requirements and travel guidelines before booking.
