Tel Aviv, March 29 (ANI) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday expressed his condolences to the family of Sergeant Moshe Yitzhak HaCohen Katz after the Israel Defence Forces confirmed Katz was killed during fighting in Lebanon.
Netanyahu said he and his wife offer their deepest sympathy to Katz’s family. He noted that Katz, who emigrated from the United States, enlisted in the Paratroopers Brigade and fought bravely in defense of the country. The prime minister also extended wishes for a swift and full recovery to three other soldiers who were wounded in the same incident.
The IDF identified the fallen soldier as 22-year-old Katz, born in New Haven, Connecticut. The military said he was killed in an attack in Lebanon that left three other soldiers moderately wounded; the injured were evacuated for treatment and their families were notified.
According to the Jerusalem Post, five IDF soldiers have been killed in Lebanon since Operation Roaring Lion began on February 28.
Lebanese armed group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a series of Sunday morning strikes on Israeli military positions near the northern city of Safed. Hezbollah said it struck the Mahava Alon base with a missile, launched drones at the Berea base, fired multiple rockets at Israeli troops and vehicles at the Al-Malikiyah site, and targeted an Israeli armored force in Deir Siryan, signaling continued cross-border hostilities.
Earlier on Saturday the IDF reported uncovering significant Hezbollah military infrastructure and weapons concealed in civilian areas of southern Lebanon, including a weapons cache inside a school in Al-Khiyam near the border. Items reportedly found included anti-tank rockets, mortar shells, grenades, launchers, light firearms and explosives.
