Iran drew global attention after launching ballistic missiles toward Israel bearing labels that referenced anti-war remarks by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Images circulated by Iranian media showed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members attaching stickers with Sanchez’s photo and a quote calling the war “illegal” and “inhuman.”
The messages appeared in both English and Persian, indicating an intent to reach audiences beyond Iran. Footage of the launches also captured personnel chanting religious slogans.
Sanchez had criticised military actions against Iran as unjustifiable and warned of wider humanitarian consequences. Spain has taken a distinct European stance by opposing escalation and reportedly limiting US use of joint military bases; that move drew criticism from US President Donald Trump, who signalled possible economic repercussions.
The conflict, which began on February 28, has escalated, with Iran warning it could target critical infrastructure across the Gulf if hostilities intensify. The United States has issued its own warnings, including possible strikes on Iranian facilities if key maritime routes are disrupted. With more than 2,000 reported deaths and rising economic concerns, the situation remains grave and raises fears of broader regional and international fallout.
Viral social posts circulated images and clips suggesting Iran placed a “thank you Spain PM” message on a missile before launch.
