Geneva [Switzerland], February 27 (ANI): Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said “good progress” was made after long and intensive talks in the third round of negotiations with the US in Geneva on Tehran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief amid escalating tensions between the two sides.
Araghchi described the discussions as one of the most serious and lengthy rounds so far. “Today was one of the most serious and longest rounds of talks. We had nearly four hours in the morning and over two hours in the afternoon,” he said.
The negotiations were conducted indirectly, with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi facilitating discussions between the two sides. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), attended parts of the talks and contributed to technical discussions. “Mr. Grossi’s presence was valuable for the technical discussions, and as usual, Mr. Al-Busaidi contributed well. During these long and intensive hours, we made good progress,” Araghchi said.
He said both sides showed greater seriousness toward reaching a negotiated solution and that they had seriously addressed elements of an agreement in both the nuclear field and sanctions. “Regarding some issues, there is now an understanding, and on others, it’s natural that we have differences,” he added.
The talks come amid diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and a significant US military build-up in the Middle East, with several countries advising their citizens to leave Iran over concerns about potential US strikes.
It was agreed that technical teams would begin work in Vienna on Monday to carry out technical reviews at the IAEA, with its experts’ assistance, to develop a framework for addressing key technical issues. Iran has clearly outlined its expectations regarding the lifting of sanctions. Consultations will take place in the respective capitals, and a fourth round of negotiations is expected next week.
