Tokyo [Japan], December 12 (ANI): A magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture on Friday at 11:44 a.m. local time (02:44 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, occurring at a depth of about 20 km (12.4 miles). The JMA issued a tsunami advisory for northern and northeastern Japan.
The agency warned the Pacific coast of Hokkaido and the prefectures of Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi could see tsunami waves of up to 1 metre following the temblor. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also measured the quake at magnitude 6.7.
Officials urged residents near the coast and rivers connected to the sea to evacuate to higher ground or inland areas. The event came four days after a powerful M7.5 earthquake off eastern Aomori on Monday; the JMA had warned that similar or larger aftershocks could occur in the days following that quake.
Japanese national broadcaster NHK reported the shaking from Friday’s quake was weaker than Monday’s 7.5 event, which had damaged roads, shattered windows and produced tsunami waves up to about 70 centimetres (2.3 ft).
The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no immediate abnormalities at regional nuclear facilities. Tohoku Electric Power said there were no problems detected at the Higashidori plant in Aomori or the Onagawa plant in Miyagi. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) reported no abnormalities at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini plants, and monitoring posts around the sites showed no changes in radiation readings. (ANI)
