New Delhi, December 9 — Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh departed Tuesday for Nairobi to represent India at the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). In a post on X, Singh said he was traveling to Kenya’s capital to “proudly represent India” at the high-level environment forum.
Singh described UNEA as the UN’s top decision-making body on environmental matters, bringing together 193 member states in biennial meetings to tackle global environmental challenges. He warned that the world is facing urgent crises — including climate change and biodiversity loss — that require coordinated international action.
Highlighting India’s domestic initiatives, Singh pointed to programs launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi such as Ganga rejuvenation, Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and the Swachh Bharat Mission as models the country offers the world. He urged global partners to commit to building a sustainable planet guided by India’s MissionLiFE approach.
UNEA-7 will be held December 8–12 at the United Nations Environment Programme headquarters in Nairobi, following the seventh meeting of the Open-ended Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR-7) from December 1–5. The previous assembly, UNEA-6 (February 26–March 1, 2024), adopted 15 resolutions addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution and waste, underscoring the role of multilateralism, science, political will and broad engagement in shaping global environmental policy.
