A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported, with tremors felt across Kolkata and several adjoining districts in West Bengal. The shaking lasted several seconds and prompted residents to rush out of homes, schools and offices in alarm.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage, and authorities in both countries are carrying out assessments. Emergency services in Bangladesh and India have been placed on alert. Seismologists are monitoring the area for possible aftershocks and are advising people to remain cautious, avoid unstable or damaged buildings, and follow guidance from local officials.
