Bali, Indonesia — December 3: A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Sumatra in the early hours of Wednesday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The agency said the tremor occurred at 02:20:33 IST on December 3, 2025, with an epicentre at latitude 2.78° N and longitude 97.90° E and a depth of 10 km.
Northern Sumatra was also shaken by a 4.5-magnitude quake on November 26. In October, a more powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit West Papua; NCS recorded that event at 11:57 am IST with an epicentre at latitude 2.26° S, longitude 138.86° E and a depth of 55 km.
Indonesia, home to more than 270 million people, sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a roughly 40,000 km horseshoe-shaped zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean that is prone to frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. The Ring of Fire contains about two-thirds of the world’s volcanoes and is responsible for roughly 90% of the planet’s earthquakes.
