Thirty Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka were repatriated on Tuesday and are now en route home, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a post on X. Authorities provided no further operational details in the statement. The issue of fishermen crossing into each other’s waters remains a sensitive and recurring point of friction between India and Sri Lanka. There have been reported incidents in which the Sri Lankan Navy fired on Indian fishing vessels and seized boats, citing alleged illegal entry into Sri Lankan territorial waters. The Palk Strait, the narrow channel that separates Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, is a productive fishing area used by communities on both sides. Because boundaries in the region are close and hard to demarcate at sea, fishermen from both countries are frequently arrested after inadvertently crossing into each other’s waters, prompting periodic diplomatic engagement to resolve such cases.
