A disturbing video showing an elderly Sikh man being racially harassed in Woodstock, Ontario has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concern about rising hate incidents across Canada.
The footage, which has circulated widely online, depicts the elder being targeted in a public setting and prompted immediate calls for stronger action against racism and discrimination. Community members described the behaviour as deeply unacceptable and said it has no place in Canadian society.
Local authorities, including the Woodstock Police Service, have responded and are reviewing the incident. Social media posts say the alleged attacker has been arrested, and many users urged the video be shared to raise awareness about the assault.
“This is not just a Sikh issue, this is a human issue,” many responses on social platforms emphasised, reflecting broader concerns about hate-motivated behaviour and its impact on communities.
The episode comes as the World Sikh Organisation of Canada has stepped up efforts to address anti-Sikh discrimination. The WSO is hosting a panel discussion in Surrey timed with the release of its report, Understanding and Addressing Anti-Sikh Hate in Canada, funded by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
Based on a survey of more than 1,600 Sikh Canadians, the report finds that 80% believe anti-Sikh hate has increased in recent years and 65% report experiencing verbal harassment. It identifies racism, xenophobia, and misinformation as key contributing factors and calls for greater awareness, education, and stronger protections to prevent hate-driven incidents nationwide.
Community leaders and residents are urging authorities and institutions to act, stressing the need for accountability, better prevention measures, and support for victims to ensure such attacks stop.
