New York, April 24 — Sibi George, Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, met Acting UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism Alexandre Zouev to discuss threats posed by terrorism and cooperation between India and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. The MEA’s official spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, posted the meeting details on X.
During his visit, Secretary (West) Sibi George also called on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to take up a range of global issues, including proposals for reforming the United Nations. George reiterated India’s commitment to multilateralism and argued for a stronger voice for the Global South, citing initiatives such as the India-UN Development Partnership Fund as examples of India’s engagement.
Earlier, on April 20, India pressed for long-standing changes to the composition of the UN Security Council at the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) meeting. Delivering India’s national statement, Sibi George said the Security Council’s current structure inadequately reflects the realities of the developing world, especially in permanent membership. He urged expanded representation for the Global South and signaled support for approaches aligned with the African working group’s model of reform.
The meetings underscore New Delhi’s dual focus on enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation with the UN and advancing its long-term priority of broadening representation within UN decision-making bodies.
