A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattled part of northern Japan early Monday, and authorities reported no damage or casualties. The Japan Meteorological Agency did not issue a tsunami advisory. The U.S. Geological Survey located the quake about 18 kilometres west of the small town of Sarabetsu on Hokkaido at a depth of roughly 81 kilometres and measured its strength at 6.1 magnitude. A week earlier, a 7.7-magnitude quake had prompted Japan to warn of a slightly higher risk of a possible megaquake for the nation’s northeastern coastal areas.
